No other person till date has worked harder to establish Buddhism in India (Of cause after Lord Buddha) than Srimath Anagarik Dharmapala paving way to the independence of Srilanka through his Amadyapa Campaign. Yet his name hardly gets mentioned in Srilankan literature/media. People who create school text books purposefully try to keep his name out, making present day school kids totally unaware of the work he has done. Children know more about Robin Hood and Saradiyel than Anagarika Dharmapala.
Secret? Well, British government boot lickers in Esmond Wickremasinghe family ( Ranil Wickremasinghe’s father) were the biggest rivals of Anagarika Dharmapala , accusing him of theft , lunacy and crating public unrest. Since they were in power for the most part of Srilankan history after independence (including Ranil’s uncle, J.R Jayawardana) this was a name they wanted out of people’s memory at any cost.
